Section II - Chemical Data

_____________________________________________________________

Chemical Family:  Carbonate of calcium and magnesium

CaMg(CO3)2

In ordinary dolomite the proportion of CaCO3 to MgCO3 is 1:1.  However, substitutions between calcium and magnesium may alter this ratio slightly.  Dolomite occurs chiefly in widely extended rock masses as dolomitic limestone and the crystallized equivalent, dolomitic marble.
